Tilley Endurables is a Canadian clothing and hat company, founded by Alex Tilley. More than 2,600 associated retailers in 18 countries around the world sell Tilley Hats and clothing.
The company started with the creation of the T1 Hat. Alex Tilley was tired of buying hats that shrank when wet, blew off his head and sank when they fell in the water when he was sailing and decided to make his own. The first hats were made at the Tilley home in Toronto in 1980. By 1983, Tilley established a mail order business called Alex Tilley and Family's Nautical Gear. In 1984, the company was renamed Tilley Endurables, Incorporated. Tilley Endurables main operations are in Don Mills, Ontario, a community in Toronto, Ontario.
The hallmark of Tilley Endurables would seem to be its famous 'Tilley Hat' -- an immediately-recognizable, hard-wearing and solidly-built hat, reportedly rugged enough that the Canadian military issues them as part of their standard field gear.
